Every star here is real: 327,625 of them, with measured 3D positions — 109,403 from the HYG catalog (Hipparcos, Yale, Gliese) carrying real space velocities, plus 218,222 fainter stars from ATHYG (Tycho-2 + Gaia DR3). Star brightness is computed live from each star's true luminosity and its distance from you — fly toward a star and it brightens by the inverse-square law, the same physics your eyes would experience.
The constellation figures are pinned to their actual stars (Stellarium's western sky culture, 88 IAU constellations). They only make sense from one vantage point. Move, and they shatter — the stars of Orion are between 26 and 2,000 light-years away and have never met each other.
The time slider moves every catalog star along its measured space velocity, linearly, up to ±100,000 years. Honest limits: real stars follow curved galactic orbits (linear is a good approximation only for ~10⁵ years — that is why the slider stops there); stars with no measured radial velocity move only across the sky, not along the line of sight; the faint background layer (complete to magnitude 10 as seen from Earth) does not move and does not include every star you would actually see from another vantage point. Two constellation-line stars (β Phoenicis, μ Sagittarii) have no reliable parallax in any catalog; their depth uses published literature estimates.
