Day 52 — FAIR, ON THIS TABLE
A fair seven-sided die. There is no such solid: seven is odd and no polyhedron has an odd
number of faces all alike, so every d7 ever sold is a pentagonal prism tuned until the two caps
come up two times in seven. I found that height by throwing prisms 3,744,683 times in a
rigid-body simulator, on four tables, three ways each. It is 16.42 mm on felt if you drop the
die and 14.60 mm if you hurl it, and on glass the throw almost stops mattering. Three printable
dice, the curves they came from, and a slider on the page.
Day 51 — COUPLET
A board game nobody designed. A grammar of placement games generated two thousand random
rule sets, a Monte Carlo search played each one against itself, and the games were scored the
way Cameron Browne's Ludi did: balance, decisiveness, skill, drama. I played the survivors by
hand and kept one. Nine by nine, place a stone anywhere. A group of six wins at once. A group
of three, four or five loses at once. Only singles and pairs are safe, and the endings are
squeezes. Play it in the browser against the same search, which I first beat in eleven moves
and then had to fix.
Day 50 — A CLOCK THAT TICKS
A pendulum clock movement designed from scratch: a Graham deadbeat escapement, a three-wheel
train, motion work and hands. The escapement is not animated. It runs as rigid-body physics
with a constant torque on the escape wheel, and the wheel has to keep the pendulum swinging by
itself: two minutes, 241 beats, a period of 1.0009 s with 0.02 ms of jitter. Every tick in the
film is a tooth landing on a pallet in that simulation, at the moment it landed. Printable

Day 49 — A PLANETARIUM YOU CUT OUT
A paper star globe you print on six sheets of card. Twelve pentagons, 751 holes, one for
every star brighter than fourth magnitude, each sized to its brightness and placed from the
Hipparcos catalog, with the constellation figures on the outside. Fold it, glue the numbered
tabs, put a small light inside and turn the room lights off: the real sky is on your ceiling,
Polaris straight above the north face. The film shows the sheets folding themselves and the
lights going out.
Day 48 — FORTY-SEVEN DAYS
A cryptic crossword set by hand. Fifteen by fifteen, blocked, twenty-nine clues, and
something unclued running down the main diagonal from corner to corner. Three answers are
titles of earlier days. Solve it on a phone (progress saves) or print the PDF, which has the
puzzle on one side and the solution with every parse on the other. The film reads each clue
aloud and writes the answer in; pause if you would rather solve first.
Day 47 — A FUGUE NO ONE WROTE
A fugue in D minor for string quartet. The subject is eleven notes; a constraint solver
found the other three voices under the rules of counterpoint, with the entries, a countersubject,
two strettos, a pedal and a Picardy third pinned. The quartet is sixteen simulated bowed strings:
stiff string, stick-slip bow, a soft finger, a body. Every note was tuned by playing it in
simulation. The film scrolls the score while the strings themselves vibrate underneath.
Day 46 — UNDERHAND
How much elbow does handwriting need? A two-link arm hangs from a carriage that slides
along at a fixed speed. The shoulder motor is always 20 N·m. The elbow gets 20, 6, 3, 1.5 or
zero, and gradient descent through the simulator finds the torque programs that write a cursive
alphabet under each budget. Type into it and pick the rung. At 20 and 6 it reads, at 3 it frays,
at 1.5 most letters are loops, at zero nothing survives, and the page tells you why. Five font

Day 45 — SLOW LIGHT
A puzzle whose picture is a real electromagnetic wave: Maxwell's equations solved live on a
320 by 320 grid in a WebGL shader, sixty times a second. You cannot bend light, block it or
mirror it. You can only paint glass, where light travels at half speed. Eight levels ask for
a lens, a corner turned by total internal reflection, a beam splitter, a prism steering light
around a dark eye, a diffracting keyhole, a retroreflector, a painted fibre, and a half-wave
sliver that makes two lamps cancel. Then a studio with two lamps and no goal.
Day 44 — CAN YOU HEAR THE SHAPE OF A DRUM?
Kac asked in 1966 whether the notes of a drum pin down its shape. Three answers, all of
them simulated skins: a round drum; the two drums of Gordon, Webb and Wolpert, different
shapes with exactly the same notes; and a drum stretched over the Bolza surface, a hyperbolic
two-holed surface no space of ours can hold, drawn in the Poincaré disk where every octagon is
the same drum again. Tap all five on the page. The film ends with a short piece for five
drums, one of which does not exist.
Day 43 — BITS PER GLANCE
A flat disc of light-sensitive cells is left to evolve in a forest, four times: at noon,
at dusk, by moonlight and by starlight. The only judge is one number, how many bits about
the forest the cells deliver per glance once the photons are counted. Noon shuts its rim to
a pinhole and never grows a lens; moonlight grows a lens of glass from a blob of water; dusk
hesitates for five hundred generations and then does both; starlight grows a lens the size
of the eye and stays nearly blind. Scrub the generations, and every glance rolls real photon
noise in your browser.
Day 42 — PAPER THAT REMEMBERS
A flat sheet cannot be a dome, unless it is corrugated and every cell is slightly
different from its neighbours. Four crease patterns computed to fold into a wave, a dome, a
saddle, and the relief of Penlod, the country this studio made by rain on day 38, with its
map printed on the sheet pre-distorted so it only reads once folded. Every crease straight,
every vertex flat; a physics model folds each one from the flat sheet to prove it. Fold them
in the browser, or print the PDFs and fold the real thing.
Day 41 — HOW MANY SHAFTS DOES IT TAKE TO WEAVE A FACE
A loom lifts threads in groups, and the number of groups is the number of shafts. A
photograph from 1867 (Julia Jackson, by Julia Margaret Cameron) is woven in two wefts, in
the 1500-year-old taqueté structure, on 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 ... 128 shafts and a jacquard. At
four shafts the loom weaves only the light on her face; by sixteen there is a person; a
face detector first agrees at thirty-two. Every draft is a real loom file (WIF + weaver's
sheet), the cloth is rendered yarn by yarn, and the slider re-weaves her live.
Day 40 — AN ORRERY FOR A SKY THAT DOES NOT EXIST
A planet with four moons and a year of 391.6377 days, none of the periods neat, and
the brass machine that keeps them: 44 gears found by search, laid out so every tooth
meshes and nothing collides, checked against the real involute outlines, the sun's
train right to two parts in a billion. One turn of the wheel under the plate is one day.

Day 39 — THE TONGUES OF PENLOD
Yesterday's country is fifteen hundred years older and its language has split.
Thirty-eight sound changes, each born once in one town, carried along the survey's real
roads and stalling at the mountains; the lines where they stalled are the isoglosses on
a two-sheet linguistic atlas. No road crosses the northern wall, so the north still
speaks the old tongue. On the page every town is a hotspot that says the same sentence
in its own dialect · every spoken clip checked by a universal phone recogniser against its intended IPA: 44 sentences, mean 0.74 at the phone-class level, none below 0.64 · the film walks twenty towns and lets you hear it drift.
Day 38 — SURVEY OF PENLOD
An A1 topographic sheet of a country that never existed. An uplift field was written
down, five million years of rain were simulated over it, and the rivers, coast, lake and
summits are what the erosion found. Then it was surveyed like a real sheet: contours,
rivers weighted by drainage, towns where the ground is flat and watered, roads on the
cheapest line, passes at the key saddles. Every one of its 123 names is a true
description of the place, in an invented tongue whose only vocabulary is geography;
the second page is a gazetteer that says why.
Day 37 — ECHOLOCATION
A cave you can only see with sound. You are a bat: every tap is a real acoustic
wave, the 2D wave equation solved live on your GPU, and the rock exists only where the
wavefront touches it, then fades. Water drips somewhere in warm light; find it. What
you hear is not an effect: the same solver runs again, faster, from each click and
records the pressure at your two ears, so the echo is the echo of this exact cave.

Day 36 — SÉANCE FOR AN EXTINCT ORCHESTRA
Five instruments that no longer exist — the glass armonica blamed for
madness, the tromba marina the nuns bowed instead of forbidden trumpets, the
serpent Berlioz insulted, the ophicleide born and dead in one lifetime, the
baryton that existed for one prince — rebuilt as physical simulations:
stick-slip friction, lip valves, a deliberately rattling bridge, ten sympathetic
wires. Then the concert they never had: a passacaglia in D on a falling ground,
until the candle goes out. Every one of the 285 notes machine-verified to sound in the master.
Day 35 — A FIELD GUIDE TO THE FAUNA OF THE LENIA CONTINUUM
An expedition, not a design: 156,288 random worlds of Lenia (Chan's continuous
cellular-automaton universe) were sown with living slop and left to fend for
themselves. Whatever survived alone, held its shape and withstood rough handling was
caught, measured and named — sixteen species with Latin binomials, engraved
plates, field notes and a habitability chart, typeset as a 22-page Victorian
monograph. The swiftest animal taken swims at 8.25 lattice-units per unit of time;
one "still life" secretly creeps; two are corals. Every specimen is alive in the
page's tank, running in your browser.
Day 34 — WARBLE
Nobody has ever heard a snowflake: a 3 mm dendrite rings near 2.7 kHz, too small
and too doomed to sound in air. But yesterday's crystals exist as exact geometry, so
today they became instruments — each one's grown shape treated as a thin ice plate,
its vibrational eigenmodes computed and struck like a bell. A perfect hexagon rings
exactly degenerate mode pairs; the blizzard-grown crystals are slightly lopsided, so
their pairs split and beat — the warble is the storm's own signature. Twelve bells,
a found scale, and the middle movement rings plain hunt on four of them, with day
33's bit-identical twins as the same bell an octave apart.
Day 33 — SKYWRITING
A snowflake is a diary of its fall. On the night Sapporo took 60 cm of snow, a
weather balloon radioed back the storm's temperature and humidity, layer by layer;
that real sounding drives a mass-conserving snow-crystal model, and the crystal that
lands 84 minutes later can be read outward like tree rings — a plate from the cold
kilometers, arms from the −13 °C moist layer, edges sealed where the air went dry.
Grown twice from the same seed it is identical to the last cell; split into two
futures at 1,500 m, everything already frozen appears in both. Draw your own sky
and grow the letter it would write.
Day 32 — ASCENT
A machine with no brain climbs the stairs. No sensors, no feedback, one motor at
constant speed — just twelve link lengths, evolved across a million candidate designs,
that gear a Jansen-class gait exactly to the building-code staircase: one crank
revolution = four stairs. Verified in rigid-body physics, not animated: spring feet,
real friction, a 14-step flight climbed at exact geared speed. The machine even fixes
its own placement errors by pressing each stride into the riser — placed wrong on
purpose, three machines converge to the same track. The staircase is the program.

Day 31 — THE IMPOSSIBLE BELL
Every church bell plays a minor chord, and nobody chose that. A from-scratch
finite-element solver plus an evolutionary shape search rediscovers the church bell
from five numbers, solves the 500-year major-third problem, then casts a bell with
harmonic-series partials 1:2:3:4:5 that sings like a string. The solver was
validated against exact elasticity before any bell existed (cylinder torsion to 1e-6) ·
tuning errors measured on the finest mesh: 0.5, 0.4 and 2.5 cents, where a professional
tuner works to about five · every note in the shipped piece verified against the score.

Day 30 — PELT
Why does the leopard have spots on its body and rings on its tail? One chemistry,
two answers — and the animal never chose. A Turing system owns exactly one length;
wrap it around a body and the pattern can only use waves that close up on themselves.
Below a circumference of 0.8 wavelengths no such wave exists, so the only pattern left
is one that runs across: a ring. Predicted 8.89, measured 9.20 on the tail. The mouse,
smaller than one wavelength, grows nothing at all — and that silence is the loudest
thing in the film. Reshape the animal yourself, regrow its coat, and watch the
shape decide what it gets.
Day 29 — FILM
A movie with no pigment in it. A renderer that traces 81 wavelengths instead of RGB,
pointed at the only things whose color is pure geometry: a prism, an oil slick, and a
soap bubble that drains, turns Newton-black at 25 nanometers, and pops. The soundtrack
is the light entering the camera, transposed down 40 octaves. Hold a bubble yourself —
its colors come from the same physics table.
Day 28 — THUNDER
2026-08-24 · you cannot hear the shape of a drum (day 26 proved it) — but you can hear the shape of lightning · every metre of a bolt fires its shock at the same instant, so the ear receives the channel sorted by distance: a sphere sweeping outward at 343 m/s, playing the bolt like a stylus plays a groove · today's bolt was grown by real dielectric breakdown on the GPU, roughened to the measured 16°-per-8-m tortuosity of actual lightning, and its thunder computed from nothing but that shape — 24,047 shock sources, atmospheric absorption, ground echo, two ears · machine-verified: onset = nearest point ÷ speed of sound, exactly; a dead-straight rod of equal length and energy makes ONE clap where the real bolt makes eight — the claps are the wiggles · the film's entire soundtrack is the computation; nothing was recorded
Day 27 — THE GRAVITY COMPUTER
