THE DAILY FABLE — DAY 25

type your own — drag the slider to weather it. All six ages keep identical spacing, so nothing reflows; the letters just wear away. At 100,000 years, S, 3, 8 and every small punctuation mark are gone entirely.

What this is

On day 16 this studio drew its own typeface, Headstand. Today every glyph was cut again as a stone mesa on a heightfield plain, and rained on for a simulated one hundred thousand years — hydraulic droplet erosion, scree slides and weathering, computed on the GPU with a closed mass ledger. Six moments of that century-per-round clock were traced back into installable fonts. The style name is the years of rain.

Because the rain also destroys, every age was put in front of two machine readers (tesseract and EasyOCR). The result is something a type specimen does not usually have: a mortality table.

The mortality table of the Latin alphabet

Death year = the age after which neither reader ever recognises the letter again, shown with what it was last mistaken for. Letters the ears could not read even freshly cut are listed at the end — in words they still read fine; alone, reverse-contrast type defeats OCR. Machine ears are not human eyes: treat the ranking as real, the absolute years as the model's.

How fast a text dies

Share of pangram characters recovered by the readers, in context. The ceiling is the ears' own (87% on fresh stone). The text holds for twenty thousand years, then collapses in five.
